Found some scans of the Dubforce Thrash feature in PVW from 2004.

The feature took place at Bruntingthorpe proving grounds Leicestershire. The day was very wet and we had a nice array of charged VW’s. The most impressive of them all was of course AW Tracksports Dual charged (Superchared and Turbochaged) 1.8T 20V.

We were not on the track alone mind, we seen the boys from EVO magazine hooning along in a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Lots of fun was being had in the SLR the sound of it at full chat was just like a WW2 spitfire flying by. They even got a bit too carried away while with the back end stepping out and them spinning off into the grass.

Anyway back to my experience, was the first time I had taken my Golf G60 (Edition One) on track and the conditions were very wet. It turned out the conditions being wet meant you could get you car in all sorts of shape through the corners having great fun, the run off was huge. While I was having fun round the track each car was equipped with professional GPS equipment for measuring performance.

My turn was coming up soon so I decided to practice my launch technique for the 1/4 Mile time. Everything was going fine but me being me wanted to get the best time possible. So ended up being a bit aggressive with the gear lever resulting in a broken gear selector.

So it was my turn for the timing equipment and I had broken my car GREAT! I managed to patch together the Gear selector, but it was very delicate. So gear changes were done at Grandad pace, so the all the acceleration tests were scrapped. I then managed one Top speed run but not carrying good speed through the corner before the straight unlike earlier when I was having fun. Only managing a top speed 131.60 MPH very disappointing. But in all it was a great fun day. Cheers PVW for hosting us.

RAC are currently offering their UK Breakdown Cover for Free! The cover is only for 90 days and you must be at least a quarter of a mile from home BUT will cover the person for any vehicle you are driving. I am already covered with the AA cover so have not applied but otherwise would.

Also the 7 days insurance cover looks good great for when buying a car. I have just today bought one days cover from Temporary Cover Limited for my car for £10 just so I can get Road Tax, if only I had found this out before could have saved myself a tenner. Oh well such is life.

To apply follow the links bellow:

The Ring is approximately 13 Miles in length with 73 corners so its very tricky to learn. The track is in the Eifal region of Germany which is very mountainous. Having had a passenger lap in the back of a car earlier this year, with no sideways support I can say it was very hard work trying to stay upright.

I have started to read the complete circuit guide put together by BMW M. The very complete guide detailing what line to take taking into account the bumps on this up and down circuit. Bellow is the guide for you to download I would highly recommended it. Enjoy a good read.

Decided to take the car for a Trackday at Bedford Autodrome. The day was booked with EasyTrack at a cost of £129 for 1/2 a day (1300-1700hrs)

The car used was a 1990 Jetta 2.0 16 valve. The car was running Koni adjustable shocks all round, allong with what I believe to be Eibach fixed springs.

Before going out on track we were giving a safety brief by the friendly staff and then signed a disclaimer form to the sum that anything that happens on track is down to the individual.

I then check the pressure of all the tyres were set to 28 psi on each corner. I went and put a few warm up laps round the circuit. The car seemed to handle really well and felt comfortable on track but I was not pushing it. I then came into the pits and checked the temperature of all my tyre they had shot up to 35 psi which was obviously to much. I then let all the tyres down to 30 psi. I read somewhere on the Club Gti forums that you can tell if the pressure is correct by checking the condition of the tyre;

Scrubing on the side walls indicates too low a pressure
Scrubbing not all the way to the side of the tyre indicates too high a pressure

Car then went out again the car was on form it felt very predicable and safe on track, the tram lining that I get on the open road was no longer apparent and the wider 215 profile tyres seemed to help grip. All the power was deployed only slight wheel spin, although the car was a constant screech of tyres as all the tyre worked hard.

The fact the car did not have too much power meant I could concentrate more on smooth lines. And after a few laps we were keeping pace with the other cars ontrack that were in theory at least superior. On the straight the car was generally only slightly slower than the cars on track but this does not seem right as other cars such as e36 M3 should have in the region of 300bhp comapared to the Jettas 140bhp. The only reason I can think these cars were slow is due to the driver being scared of their cars.

After another 4 laps I pitted in to rest the car for 15mins and let the oil temperature drop from a indicate 150 degrees C. From the temperature of the oil I would say we need to upgrade the oil cooler for longer stints on track. I also noted that as my confidence grew around the track I was achieving harder braking by heavy engine braking, so these could also possibly do with an upgrade. But maybe the fluids just need changed as I have no record of when this was last done

In all 100 miles were completed on track and I used near a full tank a fuel (£40 of Tesco 99 Octane). At the end of the day the car brake pad were completely worn out, luckily enough for me I had bought another set earlier in the day so I changed them and was on my way home. Topped up the oil once I reckon used about 300mls of oil for the day.

Also coming in after a few lap the starter motor problem reared its ugly head again, had to get push started twice but hey that’s easy enough to replace.

I can say that I did pass a lot of cars, including current M3s and Older model Porsche 911’s. I did have a bit of fun with a 996 must have been something wrong with it as I was keeping up on the corners and only slightly being left on the straights, I know he was canning it as a cloud of what I suppose was oil came out every time he changed gear.

Water temperature was a constant little above half way. Oil temp peaked at about 150 Degrees C, so for longer periods of driving we probably also need a oil cooler, I was revving the car to 5k on the straights and momentarily to around 6k on some corners.

When I went to buy the photos near the end people waiting were very interested in what the car actually was, I explained it was a 2.0 16V. One guy said it seemed to handle the corners well, and better than his M3 I can only suppose he was the guy in the M3 that I overtook.

I did of course let cars past during the day including a Ferrari 360 this then proceeded to hold me up in the slow corners, I had to back off as I knew his brakes were strong and come the straight he’d be away which he was.

Also had a tussle with a cabrio 911 about same years as the Jetta (1990’s), I was definitely faster than him through the corners and about the same speed on straights which made him hard to pass, he was a penis as he wouldn’t let me pass even though I was quicker but did eventually complete a clean overtake. God knows why it was so slow. Didn’t retaliate just let the guy get on with it.
